On the 4th December 2009 Avtar was asked to attend Buckingham Palace to be given his Member of the British Empire Medal (MBE). In Avtar's words "It was a great day and I'd like to thank Her Majesty for recognition of my work". Avtar Sandhu MBE

Having heard the news about being awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen, Mr. Sandhu said 'I am extremely proud to have been honoured in this way. Enhancement of community relations is something very close to my heart, its something my late father Darshan Singh Sandhu MBE was keen on and I'm very privileged to be in a position to be able to continue in his footsteps, I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage more people, particularly the youth of today, to play a more active roll today in local and national issues, we all need to spare time to help others, life's not all about me, me, me.'

The Cabinet Office said 72% of the 984 recipients of the awards on this year's Queen's Birthday Honours main list are "ordinary people who have made a real difference" to life in their communities.

Avtar Sandhu joins the Mayor Cllr Jennifer Rickwood along with Council Leader Jeremy Kite along with other dignitaries and 100's more from the services and the local borough, to Remembrance Sunday 8th November 2009. He pays tribute to all the fallen hero's.

This is a moment that all communities come together and pay tribute to all those who have unfortunately fallen for their country. It is our duty to remember their sacrifice always as they have left their loved ones to give us the freedom that we enjoy today.

Hilary Lister set in 2008 in a specially designed yacht which uses a ‘sip and puff’ system of three straws linked to a pressure sensitive switch. She faced extreme weather conditions around Britain. She along with her crew were not going to be frightened and discouraged by this.

So they just continued and finally arrived in Dover on 1st September 2009. When asked about her highlight of the trip, Mrs Lister said, it had been seeing marine wild life. ‘Just seeing whales 35ft long fully breached out of the water was just incredible’ she said, ‘two of them jumped like dolphins it was just amazing.’
